Caged (Kuro!!)

It was dark in here. Dark and very, very scary. Loud panting and anxiousness filled the room. All the 'experiments' there were nervous and it showed in their behavior patterns. Most of them didn't have a conscious mind and were more animalistic, and most of them were fearful of the other beasts in the room. Especially under the cover of darkness.
Especially those who were day-time creatures.
In the farthest corner, placed there to never be seen by other people, was a small, skinny boy. He was curled up tight on himself, his baggy clothes providing him with little warmth or comfort in the cold, hard steel cage. His hair was a dirty golden halo around his head, resting on his hands, while his eyes, though closed, were a dull amber. A few dark bruises mottled the skin of his arms and wrists, where marks could be seen from when he was held down for his shots and other things. He looked very pale, almost translucent.
His most noticeable features were the two huge sapphire-colored wings, wrapped around his tiny form for added warmth. Several blue feathers had settled in the bottom of the cage from where they'd fallen or been pulled out.
After several hours in the darkness, the door opened, casting a tall beam of light back at the cages. Most of the chimeras shrieked and retreated to the back of their cages. But the boy knew the drill. He crawled to the door, folding his wings against his back so they fit snugly against his bony spine. He gripped the bars at the door, his eyes flat and almost mournfully absent. He looked like a war survivor who was going through shell shock. He knew that he'd only get fed if he obeyed, even though most of the procedures hurt a lot. Like... Like the big needles. Or when they sometimes broke his wings to see how fast they would heal, or injected some medicine into him that made him sick later. But this was his best chance of getting fed. If he disobeyed, they withheld food from him for days. Sometimes even a week, if he messed up bad enough.
The normal 'nurse' came in, followed by the 'doctor'. Raimaru could understand the bird chimeras sometimes. They berated this man. They thought he was bad. Rai agreed with them.
Since he was the only human-chimera, he got more attention than the others. Well, in this lab. But this attention was never good... Rai kept hoping maybe they would be kinder to him, but they never were. If anything, more cruel. The doctor had his normal syringe as he crouched before Rai's cage. The small tori looked down, his bangs falling over his eyes, in fearful respect. He started to tremble when the man opened his cage door, reaching in. The boy shied away, but his efforts were useless, as the doctor just yanked his wrist back, hurting his arm by stretching out the thin muscles. Rai had used to pride himself on being really strong. He'd been stronger than his older brother, if even a little. But now he was thin and weak.
The needle touched his skin, making his shivers increase until he was beside himself with fear. Always, when this happened, he thought he was being 'terminated'. That he'd done something so bad they would give him poison to make him die. Sometimes he thought he'd like to die. But when the doctors came in he always grew very afraid.
"Wh-what will this d-do?" he whimpered in a hoarse voice. The doctor just looked up at him, seeming almost angry at the question. Then he smirked as the sharp needle pierced the pale skin of his wrist. He slowly, almost teasingly pushed down on the plunger, feeling the boy shudder. "Just sedate you. We'll be back when the sedative takes effect. We need to run some more tests." the doctor said. Raimaru's eyes widened, and he let out a sharp wail of pain as he was shoved farther back in his cage, the door latching shut before him. Moments later the footsteps faded and they were left in the dark again.

Why did the Fuhrer keep this from him, of all people, up until now!? He has been the Godforsaken General of the military for a year! You would think that the Fuhrer would have at least mentioned this beforehand.
The raven quickly made his way through the countless halls, entering the ones in which only certain people are allowed to go into. Black eyes revealed no true emotions as he passed everyone, and the current look on his face caused any bystanders to flinch and step away. Oh, he was mad--anyone could tell that much. General Kuro ceased his heavy, booted footsteps as he neared a door with a flashing alarm light above it. Bingo.
The door opened and a few military scientists stepped through, all seeming to be murmering about their next tests to themselves. The head scientist stopped speaking and looked over at the raven. His eyes instantly widened and he saluted with the others following soon after, an action that caused Kuro to rolled his eyes in disgust. Pathetic, just pathetic. The head scientist signalled one of the lesser scientists who scurried up to the General and handed a card key. Just what he needed.
He focused his attention back on the metal door, brushing off the scientists with a scoff. Sliding the card key through the scanner, the door unlocked and he was able to easily slip through. Just as he did so, the lights burned back to life, showing exactly how horrible these living conditions were. The raven was horrified by the creatures here, but he didn't show it. Didn't the military outlaw chimeras a long time ago? Wait... No, that wouldn't work out since there was a chimera alchemist in the military, stationed in East City. Though, that was human transmutation for that. Were the scientists even using alchemy here?
The General shook his head, clearing his scrambled thoughs. It smelled horrible in here, and one could easily see bloodstains on the ground. He weaved through the cages, glancing into each one. They all seemed terrified of him, and he wouldn't blame them. He was frightening, and going what they went through must have made it worse. Most of these... Creatures weren't even human--all of them just different animals mutated together. Some just looked like large ugly hogs, dogs, and frogs. Hey, I rhymed!
He almost gave up on trying to even spare a glance at all these horrifying beings when something caught his eye. A blue feather. The raven crouched down, staring intently at the large feather. He gently picked it up, running a white gloved finger over it. Midnight black eyes glanced at the bird creatures, trying to see which one the feather belonged to--none of them. He then focused on a darker corner, one that didn't have a light hanging over it. Bingo.
Standing, the General made his way over to the dark corner before the outline of a cage made itself known. He crouched down once more, holding the feather in one hand while the other reached into his pocket, ghosting over a gun before latching on to a flashlight. Hey, you never know when those things will come in handy!
He pulled the flashlight out from his pocket and switched it on, allowing the bulb to light up the corner. Even though it didn't show, Kuro was amazed at what he found. A human form with large wings. Angel? He highly doubted it--Angels were rumored to have snow white wings, not blue ones. The General held up the feather while examining the boy. "Perfect match." A sly smirk played across the eighteen year old's lips as he continued to observe the little bird boy.

Hearing the other animals whimpering in terror, Rai looked up. His eyes instantly widened at the strange figure, but he figured this was another test. On his hands and knees he crawled to the cage door, looking up at the General with wide, frightened eyes. When the man held up the feather, Rai just tipped his head slightly. Would this man be nice to him?
Looking up into the flashlight's glare, Rai narrowed his golden eyes. "Hurts," he whimpered, rubbing at his eyes. Black specks and dots danced behind his now-closed lids from the previously bright light, making him wince. Plus, the drug they'd slipped him before... He was starting to feel sluggish already. Because of his tiny body, the medicine could circulate faster.
Once he got used to the blinding light, he looked up at the man again, his eyes dulling. His grip tightened on the bars, his unkempt fingernails making a little screech against the metal. Despite his blurring vision, he could start making out the man's uniform.
Once he distinguished what he was, the tori closed his eyes, sagging against the cage door weakly. "Herupu," he whimpered. "Please...." Then he passed out, his body falling limp.

The man arched an eyebrow, watching the boy's actions. Those damn scientists must have made him think that anytime someone comes into the... He'd rather just call it a storage room--that it would mean a test. Otherwise, the little tori probably wouldn't have willingly came to the front of the cage. Kuro switched the settings on the flashlight, causing it to dim, at the boy's single worded sentence.
Continuing his observations, he finally took note of the tori's eyes. Sedated. Damn scientists. The General continued to watch until the boy had passed out. Normally he would think things through, but they were experimenting on a human. Even if the boy had wings, he was still human. General Kuro stood back up, turning off the flashlight and pocketing the little device. He dropped the feather and swiftly opened the cage door, not caring how much noise he made. The raven took off his uniform coat and placed it over the thin tori to keep him warm. It was winter, after all. Picking him up was a breeze, yet he was very disappointed at exactly how thin the chimera was.
"Poĭdem..." He murmered, mostly to himself, as he carried the small boy bridal style back through the 'storage room'. He made it to the door just as the scientists were started to head back in. Most of them gawked as they noticed who he was carrying, mainly because they had heard that he didn't seem to care for anyone, and the head scientist looked outraged. Kuro just glared his signature glare at the head scientist, causing him to cringe and back away. The raven just huffed, continuing his trek to and through the door. It closed behind him with a satisfying thunk, and the General began weaving through the vast amounts of hallways until he made his way to a door that lead outside that was rarely used. This meant that there was no one stationed there. How convenient.
Slipping out that door and into the cold, Kuro pulled the boy closer. Why he was even caring to help the tori was beyond him. Meh, he blamed roleplayers, hehe. It only took a few minutes to reach his slick black care in which he opened up the passenger side door and carefully placed the sedated boy into the seat, keeping the uniform coat over him. Closing the door, he made his way over to the drivers side and slipped in, starting up the car so that the heater to warm the vehicle up before backing the car up and driving out into the street. Now all he needed to do was get to the penthouse (damn rich people) he was renting and, when the boy woke up and was stronger, get him to his mansion in North City. He would be safer there...

Dark. Again. Rai just thought that maybe he was still in the cage, and that the man had left and closed the door securely behind him. Finally there was warmth, and he nuzzled into it, giving a quiet chirp of pleasure. He hadn't felt actual 'warmth' in so long... Even the scientists wore thick attire, and their body heat never escaped the gloves they wore to treat him. So this was nice...
When he opened his eyes next, he saw that he was in a car. Instant panic overflowed his system, and he twisted, automatically looking for an exit. Unable to find one or remember how to open the door, he just pressed himself close to the door, his eyes wide, chest heaving, his fingers curled around the top of the seat. His gaze found the man from before-a general, he remembered-sitting across from him at the driver's side. He swallowed thickly, terrified. "H-hello?" he whimpered uneasily.

The raven continued driving, eyes focused on the road. He would have looked like he was almost in a trance, but his 'natural' cold glare would tell otherwise. Shuffling in the seat next to him brought the General out of his 'trance'. He glanced over at the boy before focusing on the road again, not wanting to get into a wreck. "Privet." He spoke in his father's language--Russian--, keeping his voice emotionless like always.
He spared another glanced at the boy before speaking once more. "You don't have to be afraid... Those damn scientist won't lay another finger on you." Pardon his French. The raven's eyes were once again locked on the road, narrowing as someone failed to notice a stop sign.

Raimaru trembled, blinking his large eyes several times before finally starting to calm down. At the foreign word he tilted his head, his bangs hiding the confused, scared look in his eyes.
Then the man told him to calm down, and he frowned a bit, drawing himself closer to the door. He pressed his cheek against the glass. "B-but won't they be angry I left?" he asked in a small voice, obviously thinking he was in huge trouble.

Kuro just sighed, leaning back in the driver's seat. "Yes--but, as long as you are in the care of the General, they can't complain." It was true--the higher up your rank is, the more lower ranks, such as scientists, have to go with whatever you do. "How long?" As simple question directed at the Tori. The man didn't even take his eyes off the road, but he expected an answer none the less.

At this the tori relaxed, finally dropping his guard a little. Rai looked back towards the man. "How long what?" he asked, his voice followed by a small chirp. Then he thought a moment, trying to figure it out. Then he said, "I don't know. A long time." He tipped his head. "I-I don't remember exactly how old I am... But I w-was last on the outside when I was t-ten."

Ten, hn? From what he had been told, the current experiments had been going on for quite a few years--around five or so to be exact. "Then you're fifteen." The car pulled into a parking garage, sheilding them from the snow. He turned the car off and opened his door, slipping out. Kuro made his way over to the passenger side, opening the door and waiting. Either the boy was going to get up and stand, or he would have to carry him again.

Rai tipped his head again. He didn't feel fifteen... But then, he didn't feel like much of anything right now. When the door opened he nearly fell out into the garage, since he'd been leaning against the door. He looked at the snow with animosity and curiosity all at once. He knew what it was, yes, but he'd forgotten for a brief moment what it looked like. He gazed back at the man, then pushed himself up. When the scientists weren't looking, he'd sometimes stretch his legs. Just to remember what it felt like to actually use them. But he wasn't prepared for putting his whole weight on them yet, and stumbled before catching his balance. Standing, he wasn't very much taller than a child. He didn't even reach the general's shoulder in height!
"I-it feels weird..." he mumbled, blinking. The wind blew by, and he squeaked, giving a full-body shudder before wrapping up more tightly in the general's coat. Then he looked up at the man for guidance, as he had no clue what to do now.
"I-it feels weird..." he mumbled, blinking. The wind blew by, and he squeaked, giving a full-body shudder before wrapping up more tightly in the general's coat. Then he looked up at the man for guidance, as he had no clue what to do now.

Emotionless black eyes continued to watch the little teenager. Kuro sighed, scratching back of his raven head as he closed the door. "You'll get use to it again..." He allowed his arm to drape his arm around the boy's shoulders. "Come." The General began leading the boy into a hall with up and down arrow buttons on the wall. He pressed the 'up' button and waited for a few moments before the elevator door slid open. Leading the tori into the elevator as well, he pressed the '20' button, and the elevator began going up. It didn't take long for the machine to reach the floor, and Kuro stepped out, his arm still around the boy's shoulders.
He began walking down the hall--which was rather short--before halting beside a door. Unlocking the door, he stepped inside, waiting for the boy to step in, before closing the door. "This will be your temporary home until we can head over to North." Removing his arm from the boy's shoulders, Kuro made his way over to the kitchen. It seemed much to large for only one person, but he didn't seem to mind. "Want something to eat?" He called back, glancing over at the tori. Hm, maybe they should exchange names sooner or later...

Rai blinked, the smiled hesitantly. If the general said he would, he must, he supposed... He let out a small squeak, a faint blush dusting his cheeks pink at the contact. He followed, too weak to resist anyway. At seeing the elevator he furrowed his brows in worry. This didn't look..

But all those thoughts vanished.

A soft, rare chuckle emitted from the raven as he smirked once more. Opening the fridge and reaching in, he pulled out a few ingredients. "Then go wait in the living room--any of the couches should keep you comfortable." With that said, General Kuro went to work in the kitchen. Soon, the delicious scent of what he was making filled the penthouse.
While he was cooking, the General was deep in thought. Why had he rescued the kid? Normally he couldn't care less what happens in the military. But, of course, there were certain lines that couldn't be crossed without him taking matters into his own hands. The line that was crossed was the chimeras and the mention of a human there. That brought him to another question--why did he care? Sure, he was against humans--even the human Chimeras--being experimented on, but that didn't mean he had to go off an rescue the poor bird when he first layed eyes on him! Kuro cringed as th blade of the knife he was using grazed his finger. Instead of letting it bother him, the General just wrapped it up in a paper towel for until it stopped bleeding, and went back to cooking.

The tori nodded, smiling. He was starting to get more comfortable... But he was still wary. He went and sat down on one couch, and he instantly sank down into the cushion. He let out a startled squeak before wiggling, finding it extremely comfortable and much more relaxing than a steel cage....
He was just starting to doze off when the sharp, metallic-y scent of blood wafted past his sharp nose. He sat up straight, instantly wary and scared once more. Then he remembered where he was and sat up. Was his keeper injured? He'd go see... The tori left the comfort of the couch, straying into the kitchen. His bare feet padded softly on the floor as he made his way to the general's side. He looked at the blood soaking the paper towel with worry. "Are you hurt?" he asked, tilting his head. Concern made his eyes glimmer brightly, the golden irises lighter than they had been in a long time.

The General narrowed his eyes at what his was making when the boy came into the kitchen. "No, I'm fine." Really, the injury wasn't much. Just a gash in his finger. It wasn't like his finger was going to be amputated or anything. "Go back to the living room. Dinner will be ready in a few minutes."

As he said, the food was finished only a pain stakenly long minutes later. The raven quickly washed his hands, careful of his injured finger, before putting a strong bandage on said finger. With that done, he put the food--which was a thick soup with potatoes and some other random diced food in it--into a bowl. He made soup because, from the conditions of the lab, he doubted the boy had anything decent to eat in a long time. That made his stomach sensetive, and he didn't want the kid dying in his living room.
Within a few short moments, the raven carried out a tray that was balancing the bowl, a glass of orange juice, and silverware on its surface. He placed the tray on the coffee table, motioning for the boy to eat, before going over to the large empty space on the couch and plopping down on it like he owned the place. Which he did.

Rai looked up at the sound of footsteps, blinking curiously. As soon as he saw the tray of food, he let out a small squeak of wonder, his eyes going wide and shiny. He'd forgotten there could be so much food! He practically tackled the tray, shoving food in his mouth like he had never tasted anything better. Which, in his condition, it felt like he hadn't. After several scorching mouth fulls, he paused and took a long drink of orange juice, sighing afterwards. "Th-thank you, sir." he said, beaming. Just then he remembered that he actually wasn't some wild animal and frowned, his eyebrows furrowed in worry and embarrassment. He got more food on himself than in his mouth... "G-gomenasai..." he murmured, blushing and looking at the ground, expecting a sharp reprimand.

An amused smirk curled a corner of the General's mouth up as he watched the little chimera eat. He chuckled softly at the tori's actions, and Kuro leaned forward, reaching out with his hand, and ruffling the boy's hair. "Don't worry about it." General Kuro stood once more, going back into the kitchen, and coming back out with a towel. He dropped it on the boy's head. "Just clean any mess up." With that, the raven turned around and headed down one of the many hallways of his penthouse. The sound of water flowing drifted down the hall, and the General appeared once more with the sound still going. "Hurry up and finish, then you can take a bath."

Rai looked up, clearly surprised at the contact. Then he smiled, attacking the food again. He made sure to eat more slowly, so he didn't make too big of a mess. He squeaked when the towel was dropped on him, and took it off his head, staring at it in puzzlement. Then he nodded at the General. "Okay." he chimed, getting to work on doing that. While he cleaned, he didn't notice that the General was gone until he came back. At mention of a bath his eyes widened, and he nodded enthusiastically, standing up. The bowl and glass were spotless. "Thank you, mister...." Then he trailed off, frowning. He didn't know this man's name. "Mister... Um...."

"Volkov. Kuro Volkov." The raven said plainly, walking past the Chimera. He grabbed the tray, carrying it back into the kitchen. He quickly rinsed both the bowl and cup out before sticking it in the dish washer.

Why did I save that kid? The only reason he could think of at the moment was because he was the only one there who still had what made him even part human left. Pity? Sympathy? Maybe... He really shouldn't allow himself to get too lost in his thoughts. Maybe he should break out the vodka he had swiped from his father's cellar? Hm, probably not the best idea with a young teenager around...
